I recently began what I am now calling "The Carnahan Experiment". Wilsonville-based Carnahan Golf offers a line of five putters, and I decided to take on all five putters during a five round span. The first thing I noticed when I had all five putters is that they all look outstanding. The gun-metal black finish offers a great contrast when you are standing above the ball. Carnahan's signature green accents are also noticeable but not at all distracting from the task at hand. Each putter from the C. Carnahan line takes it's name from a Portland bridge, which is a nice touch.
Design: The five putters in the C. Carnahan line, known as the Insignia putter line include the Steel, Morrison, Broadway, St. John and Fremont. Every putter in the Carnahan line is a traditional putter with a milled face minus the Fremont, which is a mallet with an insert. The Fremont takes its design from its namesake bridge and is toe balanced. The Broadway is a blade with a Flare-tip hosel and is a toe-heavy putter. The St. John and Steel look similar, although there are distinct differences. The Steel has a flare-tip hosel with slightly less loft than the St. John, which offers a Long Neck hosel and a half degree more loft than the Steel. As an additional touch, the St. John features the CC Logo milled throughout the face of the putter. Finally, the Morrison offers a Plumber Neck hosel and a unique design that creates balance in your stroke. The icing on the cake is the stylish leather headcover with the Carnahan insignia stitched into the side.
Feel: Each putter offers a different feel and is designed for every players unique approach to the putting game. Some players swing straight back and through, while others swing with an inside-out swing path. Carnahan’s Insignia line takes this into consideration with the design of its putters. The Fremont had the softest feel of the five putters, due to its Elastomer insert. I found the Steel to have the hardest feel, although I really enjoyed the way the ball popped of the clubface. The milling on the four traditional putters is among the deepest in the industry which provides great feel.
Final Verdict: I found each putter to have a great feel, and I could see myself putting any of these putters in my bag full time. Carnahan Golf offers a putter that fits anybody. Carnahan Putters are a green grass only line, meaning you can only find them at your courses pro shop.
