For a company renowned for its rifle scopes, Leupold delivers an impressive product to the golf market with its Laser sighted rangefinders, the GX-I and GX-II. Based in Beaverton, this relative newcomer to the golf industry provides quite a punch with its feature loaded GX-II Rangefinder. From a game improvement standpoint, there are few products that can compare to what Leupold has to offer. The standout feature of the GX-II is it’s TGR, or True Golf Range. Taking your altitude, temperature, and even your power, the GX-II can give you a true distance. For example, say your ball sits 30 degrees above the pin, and the flag is 183 yards away. The GX-II will calculate the true distance to the hole, in this case 170 yards. You then know how far to club down. You can also enter your iron distances into the GX-II, and it will do the work for you with its Club Selector feature. Be warned though, the TGR feature is not legal for tournament play, or for handicapping purposes. If the temptation is too strong, the GX-I has the same capabilities as the GX-II, minus the TGR and Club Selector features.
In addition to the extra features of the GX-II, the Leupold range finders have proven to be extremely accurate. You can get a reading on the pin from up to 350 yards away, and trees up to 600 yards away. With its scan mode, you can get a quick reading on the pin, as well as distances to any hazards along the way. We have also found the Leupold useful in looking ahead, to be sure the group ahead is safely off the green before launching our approach shots. The menus are easy to navigate, each mode only using two buttons to operate.
The Leupold rangefinders are among the smallest and lightest on the market. Under 7 ounces, it is hardly noticeable on your golf bag. It is also weatherproof and extremely durable. Every Leupold GX-I and GX-II come with a complete array of accessories, including a carrying case that can easily attach to your golf bag, a battery that will last you up to 2000 readings, a lanyard, and an easy reference card.
